Doug Nelson has spent more than two decades assisting adults and adolescents with various concerns in outpatient settings, schools and structured substance abuse treatment programs. Since 1999, he has treated dozens of couples as well as more than two hundred individuals and families at his office locations in Virginia and Washington, DC. In 2012, Doug relocated to South Florida and one year after his arrival, he opened Fort Lauderdale Couples, Family and Individual Therapy, LLC.
Doug Nelson received his Master’s Degree in Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Counseling from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1988 and obtained his counseling license during 1993. He managed the Assessment and Referral Department of a psychiatric facility in Richmond prior to opening his first private practice in Richmond.
Doug Nelson’s career has also included the facilitation of therapy groups for substance abuse recovery, survivors of childhood abuse and coming out concerns. He has conducted debriefing groups for persons adversely affected by the loss of a colleague, job loss and workplace violence. Doug was one of the first civilians who entered the US Pentagon on September 13, 2001 to provide crisis response services to personnel who had been working around the clock since the 9/11 attacks.
Doug Nelson facilitated a one-day workshop in 2004 and 2006 that provided continuing education credits for other professional counselors, social workers and psychologists who enrolled in the course which focused on working with gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender clients in treatment settings. The workshops were presented in Virginia, North Carolina, Illinois, Iowa and Florida.
Doug Nelson enjoys the balance of working with couples, adolescents and their parents, individuals and facilitating weekly therapy groups with any presenting problem that is the catalyst for seeking help.
