CLINICAL EDUCATION CORE FACULTY
SunServe has long standing relationships with LGBT identified and LGBT care knowledgeable faculty members at various South Florida Universities including: Barry Univ., Florida Atlantic Univ., Florida International Univ., Lynn Univ., and Nova Southeastern Univ. We frequently call upon them to be faculty presenters at SunServe training events. Additionally seasoned clinical professionals who are part of SunServe’s Therapist Collective join us to direct trainings on their areas of special expertise.
The Core Faculty Members on SunServe’s Education Program Advisory Committees include:
PROGRAM DIRECTOR: James Lopresti, Ph.D., LMHC, SunServe’s Director of Clinical Education and Senior Clinical Supervisor, is a frequent presenter on gay and lesbian issues for professionals, and has taught at various graduate level programs including Barry University, Loyola University of Chicago and the Johns Hopkins University.
Terrell Brown, PhD, LCSW, assistant professor, School of Social Work, Barry University, is a trainer for The National Association of Social Workers HIV/AIDS Spectrum: Mental Health Training and Education of Social Workers Project. His dissertation addressed issues of senior care for LGBT people in minority communities.
Katharine Campbell, PhD, LCSW, Clinician and consultant in private practice, is the former Director of Clinical Services at SunServe, and past chair of the Broward Unit of the Florida Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers.
Kris Drumm, LCSW ACHT, former Group Program Coordinator at Sunserve, has over 25 years of experience of working with the LGBT community. Now in private practice at A Healing Space in Wilton Manors where she specializes in creating and facilitating transformative healing processes with individuals and groups, she has led treatment groups in various clinical in-patient and out-patient settings with special emphasis on LGBT care.
Scott Fehr, PhD, a Florida Licensed Psychologist in private practice specializing in Group Psychotherapy for over 35 years, is a Certified Group Therapist and is a professor at Nova Southeastern University where he teaches graduate classes in group work at the Center for Psychological Studies. Dr. Fehr has also written 5 text books in Group Therapy and is a Post Clinical Supervisor for Mental Health Counselors and licensure eligible doctoral candidates.
David Fawcett, PhD, LCSW, a member of SunServe’s Therapist Collective, was a founder and Chair of the South Florida Methamphetamine Task Force and is a member of the National Steering Committee for National Gay Men's HIV/AIDS Awareness Day. Dr. Fawcett is an advocate for gay men's health and served as the 2010 Program Co-Chair for the National Gay Men's Health Summit.
Jessica Gurvit, PsyD, a psychologist in private practice and adjunct professor at the Center for Psychological Services at NSU, is also the recipient of the Elisabeth Kubler Ross Award for a school based prevention program for children at-risk from grief and other losses.
Rachel Konnerth, MS, Intervention and Prevention Therapist at Broward House , co-leads both process and psycho-educational groups in both agency and private practice settings.
Raul Machuca, PhD, LMHC, NCC is an Assistant Professor of Counseling at Barry University, and a Diplomate of the Academy of Cognitive Therapy. He is a Certified Cognitive Behavioral Therapist and serves as the Clinical Supervisor for counseling services at theBarry University Family CARE Center. He is a member of the planning team for SunServe’s clinical education programs.
Paulina Martinez, PhD, LCSW, assistant professor in FAU’s School of Social Work where her teaching specialty is in the area of advance practice with children and adolescents, family and group counseling, and diversity. She has been published nationally and internationally and has presented in many conferences on issues pertaining to the LGBTQ population.
Mark Smith, PhD, LCSW, associate professor in Barry University’s School of Social Work where he teaches graduate classes in group work, co-leads the Florida Chapter of the International Association of Social Work with Groups (IASWG).
Cindy Sterne, LCSW, CAP, is the Clinical Director at Inspirations for Youth and Families, an addictions treatment facility that specializes in adolescent care. She also teaches group work in the School of Social Work at Florida Atlantic University
Robert Versteeg. MSW, DSW Cand., a long time clinical volunteer at SunServe and hospice care specialist, is currently researching the topic of LGBT care needs as they emerge in senior services and residence programs
Tom Wasik, MFA, LCSW is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker working with individuals, couples and groups in private practice and is a member of SunServe’s Therapist Collective. Trained in psychodrama, he is especially interested in the group process and its potential to create community and support while fostering change.
Alena “Katy” Yankie, LCSW is Director of Clinical Services at SunServe who has been involved in clinical care for the LGBT community for over 20 years including HIV case management and mental health services
